Can Carolina go unbeaten? It's possible

The Perfection Watch is officially on. That's right, we're talking about The Holy Grail of sports, the undefeated season. And it seems North Carolina is very much in the hunt.

Tyler Hansbrough and the rest of the Tar Heels are about to become college basketball's version of Tom Brady and the 2007 New England Patriots. There will be pressure. There will be buildup. A date with Duke in February is already circled on the calendar.

As silly as it sounds in the first week of December, we are searching the college hoops landscape for a worthy opponent who can challenge No. 1 North Carolina. Kentucky couldn't do it. Notre Dame wasn't up to the task last week in Maui. Now Michigan State can be crossed off the list, too.

The Heels are a longshot to go unbeaten, for sure. Beyond the normal ACC schedule and the ACC tourney, the NCAA tournament also will be a big test. Going 40-0? Yikes.

Still, this team looks awfully good. And the rest of the college basketball landscape is clearly a step behind.

I'd give 'em 10-1 odds of going unbeaten.

I'm betting that Carolina goes unbeaten. So much so that i already went on Stub-hub and bought two tix for Senior day March 8th In Chapel Hill so i can watch Tyler in his last home game take Dook apart to complete the perfect season. My only concerns, aside from Duke at Cameron are Wake and Clemson. Other than that nobody should be within 10 pts of the heels this season.  See you on Franklin St. Mar. 8th. I'll be the one with the t-shirt with Obama and the Heels on it.

I would bet my life on them losing at least one game this season.  The ACC will be too competitive this year for someone to run the table.  The year Duke ran the table on the ACC there was a huge talent disparity that does not exist this time around.

Let us not forget that Roy Williams is coaching a team he handpicked.  That means choke city come tournament time.

The ACC is deep in talent, there are 2-3 teams that always seem to be around top 5 come touney time.  But this group of players that UNC brings to the table has the best shot to go undefeated that we have seem in a long long time.  But the season is long, injuries, sickness, mental fatigue....those things all factor into the game plan for each game.  If any coach out there can pick his players brains, it's Coach Williams.  If there is a leader that can push his teammates by shear will is Psycho-T.  Ty Lawson, Marcus Ginyard, Ellington....all those guys are first rounders.

There is a side of me that still believes the boys in Blue will run the table and get to hang a banner in the Smith Center....that's the Tarheel in me.  But the educated basketball minded side of me says there will be a bump in the road....my prediction 39-1 and a National Championship banner hanging in the rafters.  Go HEELS.

Unbeaten? No.  Reason? ACC play.  Anyone who has been an ACC fan as long as I knows that on any given night, any ACC team can beat any other.  Records don't mean anything.  They have to play AT Duke, AT Miami, AT Wake.  Those could be some tough wins.  They play Duke twice and Miami twice.  I don't think the heels will lose more than a couple games, and may very well win the NCAA tournament, but I really don't think they can run the ACC gauntlet unscathed.  They are an excellent team, but realistically, the odds are that the will not go 40-0.  Possibly 38-2.
